Reading Is Revolution

By opening our horizons, Book Nerd no longer has to shy away from the fight. We promise to continue carrying stories that rise to today’s challenges. This includes banned books, whose absence from our shelves erases history, suppresses free thinking, and diminishes our Utah community.

Book Nerd will give out books that let the silent [Speak] so our kids won’t have to play [Hunger Games].

We will watch (er, read) the [Watchmen] so we won’t regress to long before [1984].

And we’ll defy [The Book Thief] so our books aren’t torched at [Fahrenheit 451].

  • 1984
        - This quote has been shared around a lot recently, and it speaks to exactly what we preach - reading is revolution. This is a book that has been banned, and it is more relevant now than ever!

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command”. - George Orwell, 1984

  • Lolita
        - We here at Brain Food agree with the famous meme ‘Make 1984 Fiction Again.’ But in today’s climate, we think there are plenty more stories that should remain fictional…

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is a novel about a man in his late-30s who calls himself Humbert Humbert as he isolates and victimizes a twelve-year-old child. Nabokov described the protagonist as a “vain and cruel wretch,” who not only manipulates a little girl but also us, his audience, as he tells the story.

We wish people like Humbert Humbert didn’t exist. But because they do, we support warnings about them. That’s why we believe anyone imitating or even glorifying Humbert Humbert today should be banished back to the pages of fiction and the grisly fate that awaits the infamous pedophile in the novel’s final chapter.
